Creating Effective Outdoor
Keep it Simple, Stupid!
Outdoor advertising presents limitless options for creative design.
There are dozens of sizes and shapes, endless locations and boundless
opportunites for designing effective outdoor advertising. Designing outdoor
advertising is visual storytelling, and the key to its success is simplicity.
The Outdoor viewing audience is mostly mobile, with people traveling
in vehicles or walking by as they perform the actiivties of daily life.
To capture this audience, Outdoor designs require a disciplined and succinct
creative approach. When Outdoor advertising is well-designed, it will
entertain and intrigue consumers with arresting impact.
Common Mistakes
- Using Print Ads for Outdoor/Overcrowding - Too many
letters in a tight space limit legibility
- Thin Stroke Typefaces - Thin fonts don't "pop" and
can fade into the background
- Decorative Fonts - Script letters tend to run together
and become indistinguishable
Basic Rules for Creating Outdoor
- Brief Copy
- Simple Layout
- Clear Product or Name Identification
- Large Illustrations - A picture is worth a thousand
words!
- Bold Colors - Don't be afraid of open space.
DESIGN TIPS

Be Direct
Unify all the elements in a design to create a clear and direct message.
Remember, the average viewing time for most Out-of-Home messages is only
a few seconds (about 6-10).
Minimize Words
The most effective Out-of-Home designs contain six or less words.
Use Legible Typefaces
Out-of-Home displays are often seen from far distances, which may cause
some typefaces to bleed together while others may loose resolution.
Optimize Color
Well-balanced color selection can enhance the impact of a message.
High contrasted color combos go a long way. Think Black & Yellow,
Blue & White, etc.
